Applied Computing Science (ACS) is a two-year Msc program for a total of 120 European Credit Transfer
System (ECTS) points.
The first year is devoted to courses and projects; the second year starts with one period of
courses and the
remaining three periods are reserved for the MSc thesis project.
The programme is composed as follows. The student chooses at least five courses from the list of core courses (each course for 7.5 ECTS points):
These courses form the core of what Applied Computing Science is all about.
In addition to the "regular" courses students can conduct an experimentation project.
Such a project gives the participant the opportunity to apply the theory studied in one or more of the regular
courses to challenging problems from science and industry.
Students can do up to 15 ECTS worth of experimentation projects, but only 7.5 ECTS can be used as a core course.
The Research Seminar ACS is a research-oriented seminar about a more advanced or specialized subject;
the subject can change from year to year.
Applied Computing Science provides every possibility to further tailor the programme to the student's
individual interests and needs: ACS students can choose up to five elective courses.
An elective can be any course from the general MSc Computer Science curriculum or (at most two)
from outside Computer Science (e.g. biology, business, etc).
As an elective, it is also possible to conduct an independent study, for example to delve more deeply into
a subject that has the student's particular interest.
Such a project is always conducted under the supervision of one of the ACS staff members.
The program is concluded with a MSc thesis project (45 ECTS points) that can be performed in the department
or in a company.
Every ACS student must have his/her MSc programme approved by the graduate student advisor
Ad Feelders before starting the programme.
