Computational Modeling in Music

The Journal of the German Society for Music Theory Zeitschrift der Gesellschaft für Musiktheorie is planning a special issue on computational modeling in music. The journal has both online and  print versions.

This special issue focuses on the knowledge about fundamental concepts in music research that has been generated within the process of computational modeling in areas such as music theory, analysis, retrieval and cognition.

Computational models about music are often built on concepts derived from music research outside computation, such as music theory. This special issue focuses on the contribution of computational models to the understanding of the concepts developed in music research.

How does the computational modeling contribute to verifying or falsifying concepts from music research?
To what extent have computational models hence changed (or confirmed) our understanding of music?
What are important questions about music that computational modeling would pose to music research?
