About MPE/NL

In 2013, more than 120 mathematics institutes world wide lended support to Mathematics of Planet Earth, an international initiative under the flag of UNESCO. The goal of MPE2013 was to raise awareness for mathematics research to help address such challenges such as climate change, sustainability, natural disasters, ecology, biodiversity, and epidemiology. With MPE/NL we hope to establish a network to stimulate and facilitate collaboration between mathematicians and earth scientists in the Netherlands, by organizing lectures, workshops and summer schools, and maintaining a mailing list with announcements for the multidisciplinary community.

New projects funded by NWO

To provide an impulse for multidisciplinary mathematics research for Earth sciences, NWO funded seven PhD research projects (see NWO news item, Nov. 27, 2014) within the program "Essential Dynamics and Uncertainty" related to the international MPE initiative.

Lorentz Center Workshop

The workshop Emerging Applications of Data Assimilation in the Geosciences takes place at the Lorentz Center, Leiden, 13-17 Mar 2017.

Experts on data assimilation, Bayesian statistics, seismology, and (paleo-)climatology gather to exchange knowledge, suggest new data-assimilation methods suitable for applications in each field, and to stimulate future collaborations.

PhD students are encouraged to participate. Registration is free but limited to 55 participants.
