Welcome! The 2020 edition of Trends in Functional Programming in Education will be held in Krakow Poland, co-located with TFP. TFPIE takes place on the 12th of February, followed by TFP on 13-14 February. The location for the workshop is Computer Science Centre of AGH, ul. Kawiory 21, Krakow

Note that due to TFP being co-located with Lambda Days, TFPIE has moved along and instead of early summer now takes place in February.

The goal of TFPIE is to gather researchers, teachers and professionals that use, or are interested in the use of, functional programming in education. TFPIE aims to be a venue where novel ideas, classroom-tested ideas and work-in-progress on the use of functional programming in education are discussed. The one-day workshop will foster a spirit of open discussion by having a review process for publication after the workshop. The program chair of TFPIE 2020 will screen submissions to ensure that all presentations are within scope and are of interest to participants. After the workshop, presenters will be invited to submit revised versions of their articles for publication in the journal Electronic Proceedings in Theoretical Computer Science (EPTCS).

TFPIE workshops have previously been held in St Andrews, Scotland (2012), Provo Utah, USA (2013), Soesterberg, The Netherlands (2014), Sophia-Antipolis, France (2015), College Park, USA (2016), Canterbury, UK (2017), Gothenburg (2018) and Vancouver (2019).

Invited Speaker

We are happy to announce the invited speaker for TFPIE 2020, Thorsten Altenkirch, who also speaks at Lambda Days. At TFPIE 2020 he shall be talking about his new book, Conceptual Programming With Python.

How To Register

This year TFPIE takes place outside of the Lambda Days/TFP organisation, although it takes place near their location. This means you do need to register separately for TFPIE; it also means you can register for TFPIE without registering for TFP/LambdaDays, and vice versa.

Registration is mandatory for at least one author of every paper that is presented at the workshop. Only papers that have been presented at TFPIE may be submitted to the post-reviewing process.

Registration is 25 euro per person. This will be used to pay for coffee breaks and a hot lunch.

On-line registration is now closed. Until February 7 2020, we can however entertain a limited number of additional registrations. Please send an e-mail to j.hage@uu.nl if you want to register.

Topics

TFPIE 2020 welcomes submissions describing techniques used in the classroom, tools used in and/or developed for the classroom and any creative use of functional programming (FP) to aid education in or outside Computer Science. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

In addition to papers, we are requesting best lecture presentations. What’s your best lecture topic in an FP related course? Do you have a fun way to present FP concepts to novices or perhaps an especially interesting presentation of a difficult topic? In either case, please consider sharing it. Best lecture topics will be selected for presentation based on a short abstract describing the lecture and its interest to TFPIE attendees.

How To Submit

Potential presenters are invited to submit an extended abstract (4-6 pages) or a draft paper (up to 20 pages) in EPTCS LaTeX style. The authors of accepted presentations will have their preprints and their slides made available on the workshop’s website. Papers and abstracts can be submitted via easychair at the following link: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=tfpie2020. After the workshop, presenters will be invited to submit (a revised version of) their article for review. Note that this implies that at least one of the authors has registered for TFPIE 2020 and has presented the work at the workshop. The PC will select the best articles for publication in the journal Electronic Proceedings in Theoretical Computer Science (EPTCS). Articles rejected for presentation and extended abstracts will not be formally reviewed by the PC.
