Research on mobile video browsing

Demo at ACM MM 2008 (more info)
Limited screen size, restricted input capabilities, and different needs resulting from the mobile context appear to be the biggest challenges in the development of future services and applications for mobile multimedia. For example, initial studies with the usage of mobile video and TV suggest that in a mobile context, users want to interact and more actively deal with the content. For this reason, we started working on better interfaces and techniques to search and browse video data on handheld devices. We developed several interfaces enabling users to interactively skim a video at different levels of granularity. To get an initial idea of your work, you might want to have a look at our overview article in IEEE MultiMedia 15(3) or at the video on the left which shows the interfaces we presented in a demo at ACM Multimedia 2008. Detailed information about different designs together with evaluation results can be found in the publications listed below.

Mobile ZoomSlider The Mobile ZoomSlider was the first interface we developed for mobile video browsing. It is based on a previous design for video skimming on the desktop (cf. ACM MM 2006 (PDF). The implementation on a PDA was also presented in a demo at MobileHCI 2007 (PDF) and at the "Mensch & Computer 2007" conference (PDF, in German) where it was awarded with the first price for best design presentation.
