MRI Spring School 2004
Lie Groups in Analysis, Geometry and Mechanics
Prerequisites
A working knowledge of the elementary theory of Lie groups is presupposed. An excellent sourse for this is the following set of lecture notes, which can be freely downloaded:
These notes are nicely complemented by the book
- B. Simon: Representations of Finite and Compact Groups, American Mathematical Society, Providence, 1996.
Another excellent introductory text is
- W. Rossmann: Lie Groups. An Introduction Through Linear Groups, Oxford University Press, Oxford, 2002.
Further sources are
- J.J. Duistermaat and J.A.C. Kolk: Lie Groups, Springer-Verlag, Berlin, 2000,
and the classical texts
- V.S. Varadarajan: Lie Groups, Lie Algebras, and their Representations, Second printing, Springer-Verlag, Berlin, 1984,
- S. Helgason: Differential Geometry, Lie Groups, and Symmetric Spaces, Academic Press, New York, 1978.
