Networked Virtual Environments - Architectures and Applications Peter Quax (Universiteit Leuven) Abstract. In this talk, I will focus on networked virtual environments, which serve as the basis for modern massive multiplayer on-line games and virtual community applications such as World of Warcraft and Second Life. Our research targets several networking aspects associated with this subject, including synchronization, scalability, optimal bandwidth usage and mobility. I will discuss the core technology behind the ALVIC framework, which was (and is still being) developed as a basis for the creation and deployment of networked virtual environments. Also, some non-technical results will be shown that were achieved using this framework as the basis for applied research projects in a wide variety of contexts. |
