• 1985: Master's degree in law, at the Faculty of Law of the University of Groningen.
• 1988: Master's degree in philosophy, at the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Groningen.
• January 1993: PhD degree (cum laude) at the Faculty of Law of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, with a thesis on 'Logical tools for modelling legal argument'.

Positions

• From June 2004: Professor of ICT & Law at the Faculty of Law section of the University of Groningen (parttime).
• From October 1998: Lecturer at the Intelligent Systems section of the Department of Information and Computing Sciences, Utrecht University.
