A short course on the formation of the spectral continua and lines from the Sun, first in LTE and then in NLTE. The equations were distilled out of my regular course Opwekking en transport van straling for Utrecht University bachelors students, later posted as Introduction to astrophysical radiative transfer.
I wrote this short English-language text for summer students at NSO/Sacramento Peak (New Mexico) in 1993, where I was working on, but did not complete, a full rewrite with new figures of my Utrecht course to replace R.C. Peterson's computer-aided translation Generation and Transport of Radiation. I inserted the figures that I did complete at the time also into this text.
