When Utrecht astronomy
moved in 1987 from Sterrewacht
Sonnenborgh
to the
Buys Ballot Laboratory
in campus
"De Uithof", at my suggestion it renamed itself "Sterrekundig
Instituut Utrecht" (SIU). The classical spelling was maintained when
the official spelling changed later to sterrenkundig, just as in
"Sterrewacht Leiden", because spelling changes do not affect given
names. (I prefer the singular anyhow because one star suffices for a
lifetime of astronomical research.)
Thus, the SIU started in November 1987. It ceased to
exist
in early 2012, ending
370 years of astronomy at Utrecht University.
