Title: The Utrecht photometric system (≡ UPS) and some results
with it: The masses and the radii of the components of U Cephei
and aphotometric-spectrometric analysis of the Algol-type binary U
Coronae borealis
Authors: Heintze, J. R. W.
1989SSRv...50..257H Altcode:
The Utrecht Photometric System (UPS), a narrow-band photometric system
with wavelength regions in which no telluric lines and almost no
stellar/interstellar spectral lines are present, is discussed. The
UPS design include photomultipliers with GaAs cathodes that have
high sensitivity up to 900 nm. The system and its operation are
described. Results are presented from using the UPS to study the
components of eclipsing binaries obtained from light curves.

Title: A note on the calibration of effective temperatures.
Authors: Heintze, J. R. W.
1985IAUS..111..433H Altcode:
It is pointed out that the discrepancy in the derived chemical
compositions between B-A1 stars and stars of later spectral types can
be remvoed if another T-sub-eff calibration is applied for A and F
type stars than the one usually used. The effective temperatures of
the components of YZ Cas and TY Pyx were studied closely. It would be
interesting to find detached systems at high galactic latitudes with
masses between 2.2 and 1 solar masses that feature a total eclipse. In
such cases it should be possible to make reliable determinations of
various T-sub-eff relations (solar mass ratio, log g, abundance). EK
Cep could be a candidate (Tompkin, 1983), although its galactic is
+12 degrees.

Title: The Accuracy Limit of Groundbased Stellar Photometry
Authors: Heintze, J. R. W.; de Jager, C.; van der Veen, W.
1984srps.conf..157H Altcode:
The ultimate accuracy that can be reached in ground-based stellar
photometry depends primarily on the fluctuations of the atmosphere
causing scintillations and variations of transparency, and besides on
the instrumental stability and available integration time. Fluctuations
in instrumental stability can be made negligibly small by basing the
optical system and observational methods strictly on differential
techniques. The integration time constitutes, together with variations
in the atmosphere, the real limiting factor. Considerations based on
available atmospheric and photometric observational data, yield that
the present-days practical limiting accuracy of ground-based photometry
is of the order of (3 - 7)×10-4mag for the observation of
a 7th mag star by a one-meter telescope at an altitude of 4000 m and
an integration time of 103s.

Title: Empirical bolometric corrections for the main-sequence.
Authors: Habets, G. M. H. J.; Heintze, J. R. W.
1981A&AS...46..193H Altcode:
Empirical relations are derived between the bolometric corrections and
masses, spectral types and effective temperatures of main sequence
stars. The most reliable available data for visual/astrometric
binaries and eclipsing binaries that are at the same time double-lines
spectroscopic binaries was used to obtain empirical mass-spectral
type and mass-visual luminosity relations for the first group, and
empirical mass-gravity, mass-radius, mass-spectral type, mass-effective
temperature and mass-bolometric luminosity relations for the second. A
mean mass-bolometric correction relation is then derived for the
entire range of main sequence stars which may be transformed into
relations between the bolometric correction and spectral type or
effective temperature. The results are found to agree well with the
theoretical results of Buser and Kurucz (1978) for masses greater than
7 solar masses and equal to 1.35 solar masses, and with the empirical
results of Code et al. (1976).
