Na enkele emailtjes heb ik dan toch de meest recente voorlopige versie van het paper Historical Implications of a Formal Theory of Syntactic Variation door Chiara Gianollo (Pisa), Cristina Guardiano (Modena e Reggio Emilia) & Giuseppe Longobardi (Trieste) toegestuurd gekregen. Dit is de versie die zij hebben gebruikt op hun presentatie op DIGS8.

Ik had enkele maanden geleden al het abstract gelezen, maar dit bevatte geen details over de syntactische maat die ze hanteren, en geen beweegredenen waarom het verschil tussen twee parametervectors als coefficient uitgedrukt wordt in plaats van een enkelvoudige verschil- of overeenkomstwaarde.

Welnu, de syntactische afstand tussen twee talen - in hun terminologie probability of partial agreement - wordt berekend via de formule n boven h, de binomiaalcoëfficiënt dus, waarbij n het totale aantal parameters (36) is, en h het aantal ongelijke binaire parameterwaarden tussen de twee vectors die de talen representeren. Overigens is een kenmerk van een faculteitsfunctie dat deze zelfs sneller groeit dan een exponentiële functie.

Helaas weet ik na het lezen van dit paper nog steeds niet wat de beweegredenen zijn voor het uitdrukken van het verschil tussen twee parametervectors als coefficient ...

Laatste paragraaf:
"The development of this approach will be argued to radically renovate our theoretical understanding of the historical and geographical distribution of grammatical properties and, especially, to seriously question the traditional and somewhat pretheoretical belief in the orthogonality of grammatical typology and language diachrony/genealogy. In the attempt to progress 'beyond explanatory adequacy' (in Chomsky's 2001 sense) this line of investigation may lead toward a better understanding of classical and new issues in the cultural and natural history of language."
