The Design

Klaas attends a book binder group as a hobby activity. Mostly, members of such a group practice on books, but Klaas produced a box for a replica battery. A box like this contained batteries (in the 1920-ies) for radios. In this box you can place a battery, dry or rechargeable, or you can build a power supply for battery radio's in it.

Sound samplePLAY SOUND   A B0X19U radio playing from 39V DC is very noisy. Most likely, this is due to the switched power supply, a battery or linear power supply could be more quiet.

This Object

The box houses a 39V power supply. This is composed of two laptop power supplies, a Canon CA-CP200 (24V at 2.2A) and a Dell AD-4214N (14V at 3A). With these two in series, the total supply gives about 39V and should be able to give more than te 2A I need.

On the Wikipedia page about the All American Five I read that a modification allows the radio's to operate from 32V DC. I experimented with a Dutch ACDC set, the so-called UUtje, and found it can play on 39V DC. To this end, the heater circuit is rewired. The rectifier UY85 is removed. The UCH81 and UBF80 in series run perfectly on 39V. The UCL82 also is heated from 39V, which is far subnominal because the normal heater voltage is 50V. The rectifier is replaced by a diode, which gives a B+ voltage around 39V. The radio is designed to run on 120 to 220V as B+, so it is quite surprising that it will play on 39V too.
