The Design

Modern radio's are a bit more compact than those of fifty years ago, but mostly follow the same general design. The radio is a standard analogue AM/FM set, this time with the printed circuit upside down. Where most often you see the resistors and capacitors on the board, here you see the printed circuitry and just one IC.

Noteworthy is the extra circuit board on the right. Because we deal with five power sources here (the rechargeable NiMH battery, the dynamo, a solar panel, USB port, and adapter jack), all power related functions are on this sub chassis. It also includes a blue LED that burns during charging of the battery. A missed opportunity here is the use as a flash torch. The image taken from the top side (right) shows that a ferrite antenna is placed under the circuit board, and you can also see the solar panel and the green battery there.
