The Design

The 1950 model line of Erres centers around the model 5 (KY505). The 507 is quite similar to the 505, except it has a larger cabinet (with more wood inlays also) and speaker, and an additional tuning eye.

The MW range on Erres radio's is quite wide, it goes up to 174m (or 1724kHz) officially, but I measured this radio to receive up to 1780kHz (169m) even.

This Object

This radio was in the Kringloopwinkel in Gorinchem when I was on a weekend bike trip in April, 2023. The transport limitation prevented me from buying the set, but I tipped the NFOR about this set. The reactions were about how big a set one can take on a bicycle. A month later I passed through Gorinchem again, the radio was still there, and that time it became mine. The distance from Gorinchem to my place is 45km, which I biked with an ear-to-ear grin.
There were signs of a few earlier repairs, like "modern" capacitors. The output transformer was replaced by an Amroh Muvolett 7043, which is a pity because it does not have the anti hum coil or the feedback coil. After the usual cleansing and replacement of capacitors, I found the volume control defect and the power chord in bad state. Fortunately, I could order replacement parts from BDC, or Ben Dijkman & Co. The parts arrived on June 13, and after fitting them, the radio worked fine. The tuning eye EM4 was completely dim, but I found a new one in my tube stock.

Unfortunately, when I turned the radio upside down, the dial scale fell out and broke. Hans has given me a dial for the Erres KY505, which has the same band coverage, but is slightly smaller. The radio works very well with my TelRaam loop aerial.

I constructed a small accompanying FM507 unit to feed FM and Bluetooth audio to the Erres KY507. This 12cm package is placed behind the radio, and connected with an audio cable that converts the signal to mono. When testing this unit, I suddenly suffered a short in the Erres (power consumption rising to 80W, no audio, heavy hum). With a series bulb I found out that the heavy draw started two seconds after switch on, that is too short for the output tube to warm up. So I feared a short in the output transformer. Fortunately, this was not the case, but C35 had shorted out. This was a new 2n2 2kV capacitor.
