The Design

This Object

We found the radio in a thrift shop, when searching for stuff in our "fifties room".

The radio was in quite good order and I had little trouble to bring it to full life. Of course I replaced the paper capacitors in all places where they could hurt (see old and new chassis picture). The tubes measured OK. The ferrite antenna was loose in the cabinet and only one wire was still connected, but I could find out the connections quite easily. After all these minor repairs, the radio played immediately.

I did not find the usual dipole or sheet antenna for FM. In stead, I discovered in the schema that there is a kind of mains antenna: a small coil couples the FM antenna input to the mains. I was uite surprised about this, because I would not expect much FM current in the mains line, especially not running through the transformer coil. But the coupling coil is actually there under the chassis, and to my surprise and joy, it works very well.

After two evenings of easy work and some measurements, I had the chassis in perfect order and could put it back in the cabinet.
