The Design

Plano was the name for a line of radios started in 1958 with the B5X84A. Similar radios, with the same size and the same tubes, were sold until 1964 or 65. This is one of the later planos.

The early planos had two output amplifiers so that stereo records could be played. From about 1963 (model B5X43A) the planos were also fitted with stereo demultiplexers to hear FM broadcasts in stereo.

This Object

I have had several planos myself, including three B5X43A's. I think that around 1964 some shop here in Zeist had a very attractive discount on them. None of the planos required any non-trivial servicing, which witnesses for the quality of Philips radios of the era.
